English as a Second Language (ESL)

Sign up for a class at the Adult Learning Center 's English Language Institute. You can learn to communicate in English by developing your listening, speaking, reading, writing and computer skills.
- Beginning, intermediate and advanced ESL classes are available during the morning, afternoon and evening.
- Classes are divided into nine-week sessions.
- Daily attendance is required.
- All classes are taught by certified ESL instructors.
How To Take ESL Classes:
- Come to the office of the Adult Learning Center (310 N. Providence), Room 113 at the north entrance of the Douglass High School Building (corner of North Providence Road and Park Avenue).
- Please show documentation such as passport, visa or resident alien card to the receptionist in the office. If you have a social security card or a driver's license, bring those also.
- Sign up for an enrollment appointment.
- Attend a two-day enrollment and take English placement tests. You must come both days.
- You will be assigned to a seven-week ESL class.
- Daily attendance is requipink at each of our sites. Attendance policies allow for three unexcused absences per session. If you are unable to make this time commitment at the time you register, please sign up for the next session that will allow you to meet the time requirements.
- Classes meet Monday through Thursday. The English Language Lab Hours are Monday through Friday. Classes meet for 4 -10 hours a week depending on ESL class level.
The English Language Lab and Library is available to all enrolled ESL students. The Lab staff provides training in English and computer skills.

- Use English language programs in listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Study for Citizenship
- Study for TOEFL
- Study English for work
- Learn how to use email
- Learn how to use a scanner, CD burner and printer
- Use classroom textbooks and cassettes to study
A certified ESL instructor will be in the Lab to help students.
The English Language Institute provides the following activities to support non-native English speaking adults to help improve their English language skills, secure employment and learn about community resources and citizenship:

- Career Readiness Training
TOEFL Speaking Skills Class for advanced ESL students already preparing for the TOEFL

Citizenship classes are generally offered in the spring and are free to registered students. Check back later in the year for next spring's schedule.

The English Language Lab provides an opportunity for adults who are non-native English speakers to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities. It offers programs for citizenship, life skills, English at the workplace, and TOEFL preparation. TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is a requirement of many institutions of higher education for applicants whose primary language is not English. In addition, the Lab is supervised by a certified English as a Second Language instructor. The instructor's role is to assist students and facilitate learning.
