surgical technology

Surg Tech

A surgical technologist (ST) is an allied health professional who works as part of the surgical team to ensure that the operative procedure is conducted under optimal conditions. The demand for surgical technologists is expected to increase as the number of surgical procedures expands due to a growing and aging population. In 2002 there were approximately 72,000 surgical technologists.

The employment rate of surgical technologist is expected to grow faster than average (an increase of 21%-35%) through the year 2012. The Columbia Public Schools Program of Surgical Technology prepares the graduate surgical technologist with the educational foundation to deliver quality patient care during the perioperative experience. The program strives to provide the surgical practice community with skilled, professional practitioners. The program offers the framework for life-long learning of the practitioner. Currently the program’s employment placement rate is 97%.
