Medical Transcription

Working with Career Step online learning, we now offer Medical Transcription and Medical Transcription Editor Programs allowing you the freedom and flexibility to train for a long-term career in the medical field. With curriculum created by experts as well as personal, on-going support to help you through the training process, these programs will provide you the knowledge and expertise needed to become a Medical Transcriptionist or Transcription Editor.

Medical Transcriptionists and Medical Transcription Editors both deal with dictation of doctor-patient interactions but provide different roles in that process. Transcriptionists type the audio dictations of doctor-patient interactions, creating the reports that make up patients' medical records. Transcription Editors are specialized medical transcriptionists who correct and edit reports created by speech recognition software, which electronically translates dictations into text.

The 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that there will be 11,700 new medical transcription jobs before 2018 which will be an 11% increase to the medical transcription field. This increase will be due to demand for medical services created by a growing and aging population.

The Transcription program is a 570 hour program with classes such as, Keyboard Kinetics, Clinic Notes, and Anatomy and Disease, among many others. The total cost of the program is $1895. The Editor program trains you for standard transcribing as well as editing. The program is a 640 hour program and costs $2,395. Some of the classes in the editor program include Editing Theory, Pharmacology, and Healthcare Documentation.
